The idea of placing some meditation stations in the grounds of St. Paul's Church developed with the building of a perimeter fence and the establishment of some new gardens.
Recognizing that the grounds around a Church building serve many purposes, there was a strong desire to ensure that there also be a suitable space for meditation. The intention is to create an attractive, inviting space where people may wish to gather for prayer or engage in contemplation. The placing of meditation stations in the gardens helps to provide a focus for those who come into this outdoor space seeking some quiet stillness and an opportunity to reflect.
There are eight meditation stations in total. They can be used individually or as part of a sequence.
The first station (Psalm 46:10) is from the Hebrew tradition and the final station is Jesus' new commandment. In between the other six stations are quotations from the writings of our patron Saint Paul, which have been chosen as words of encouragement and exhortation.
The stations have been made out of Cypress Gold, a form of Cypress pine, a renewable resource. It will weather silver grey, so blending with the garden foliage. The scripture verses are engraved on acrylic sheet, covered with clear polycarbonate to protect them from ultraviolet light and vandalism.
